ART HOUSE – Mother of Snow Cranes
Premiere:
27.9.2024
Length:
1 h 18 min

Ellen Vuosalo is an ornithologist who has become famous for her Siberian snow crane conservation work in Iran. She was born in Canada in 1931 to a family of Finnish immigrants. Today she is known in Iran by her nickname Mother of Cranes. Mother of Snow Cranes is a film about the relationship between man and nature, the meaning of life and the role of women in Western and Iranian cultures over the last hundred years.

Ellen has lived in Iran for over 55 years. The 1979 revolution made life dangerous for women, and there was news of violence, floggings and executions spreading from nearby villages. Even though everyone questioned Ellen’s decision to stay and thought she was stupid, nothing, not even being suspected of espionage, has gotten her to abandon her log cabin.

“Now there’s another revolution going on here,” Ellen says, as calls of “woman, life, freedom” echo from the video on her phone.
